Fredag i Göteborg. WestCoast har två bilar igen

Martin Öhlin looks forward to the city race in Gothenburg this weekend, his first taste of city race in the STCC-car and he already has a gameplan.
”It seems to be a trend this year that drivers from the area where we race are driving into me. So this weekend I will avoid such drivers which means avoiding the Volvo-drivers. The best way is to be in front of them,” he says.
He’s had a mixed start to his first season in STCC. He’s been showing he has the speed and has been the fastest BMW-driver so far but has not the results to show for that. Something he hopes can be changed this weekend.
”It’s about time for that and why not in Gothenburg which is a bit like the race of the year. I enjoy it there, the atmosphere with racing in the city and with a lot of specatators is good for you as a driver. It’s also a fun track to drive, being close to the walls gives you the same kind of extra focus you have racing at a track like Nordschleife and a single mistake can be very costly. You have a extra level of focus and that is a graet feeling.”
After having been the sole driver in the team the last few race weekends Martin Öhlin once again has a team mate. Richard Göransson returns to STCC after his violent crash in Denmark in April and the injuries he got there. Martin is happy to have a team mate again.
”It’s great to have Richard back. It especially benefits me to be able to compare my data with his and having two cars in the team to try things on. It’s a big thing for the whole team and I have great expectations for this weekend. It will be fun and the goal is of course to head back home with two great results with me. It’s about time!”
An optimism for the weekend is also shared by team manager Dick Jönsson Wigroth, happy to have Richard back in the team and see WestCoast Racing as a two-car team again. Something he thinks is positive for the whole team.
”Gothenburg track is difficult race track but we always have a nice weekend racing there. This will be an extra nice weekend for us since Richard is back which motivates the whole team. Martin has been really quick so far and he has shown we have a great car and proved he is capable of using that. Unfortunately he doesn’t have the results to show for that but we know that will come. Now we have two cars again and can share data between them which is an advantage for both us and the drivers. We have a victory here from last year to defend and WestCoast Racing are looking forward to this weekend!”
Extra tests and free practice will be held tomorrow Friday and a time schedule for the weekend will be published here tomorrow.
Martin Öhlin ser fram emot helgens race i Göteborg vilket är hans första stadsrace i STCC-bilen och han har redan funderat ut en plan.
– Det verkar vara en tendens att hemmaförare kör på mig i år så den här helgen ska jag i så fall undvika Volvobilarna, säger Martin. Det bästa är väl att helt enkelt se till att vara före dem.
Martin Öhlin har haft en blandad inledning på säsongen. Han har i de senaste racen varit snabbaste BMW men efter att ha blivit påkörd båda helgerna speglar resultatet i mästerskapet inte farten. Det hoppas han vända på den här helgen.
– Det är dags för det och varför inte i Göteborg som är lite av årets race. Jag trivs bra där, atmosfären med ett stadsrace och med mycket publik lyfter en som förare. Det är också väldigt kul att köra, närheten till murarna påminner om samma extra fokus man måste ha på en bana som Nurburgring och minsta lilla misstag blir dyrbart. Man skärper till sig lite extra helt enkelt och det är en häftig känsla.
Efter att ha kört ensam i teamet de senaste racehelgerna har Martin Öhlin återigen en teamkamrat. Richard Göransson återvänder efter sin skada han fick i kraschen i Danmark och Martin ser fram emot att ha en teamkamrat igen.
– Det är jättekul att Richard är tillbaka. Det ger framför allt mig väldigt mycket att kunna jämföra mina data med hans och att vi har två bilar i teamet. Det lyfter också hela teamet och jag har bra förväntningar på helgen. Det kommer att bli roligt och målet är självklart att åka hem med två väldigt bra resultat. Det är dags för det!
Teamchef Dick Jönsson Wigroth ser också fram emot helgens race. Richard Göransson är tillbaka och WestCoast Racing är återigen ett tvåbilsteam vilket är Dick menar är positivt för hela teamet.
– Göteborg är en tuff bana men det är alltid en väldigt rolig helg, säger Dick. För oss blir det här en extra rolig helg då Richard är tillbaka och det ger hela teamet ett stort lyft. Martin har varit väldigt snabb i år och visat att vi har en bra bil och att han har farten för att utnyttja den. Tyvärr har resultaten inte motsvarat den farten men vi vet att det kommer att lossna. Nu har vi också två bilar att jämföra mellan och det är en fördel för oss och båda förarna. Vi har en seger att försvara från förra året och hela teamet ser fram emot helgen!
Car # 1 returns to STCC. Reigning STCC-champion Richard Göransson returns to STCC earlier than planned after his violent crash in the season opener at Jyllandsringen in Denmark in April. The doctors estimated a recovery time of three months but Richard Göransson returns already this weekend for the city race in Gothenburg.
”This feels really good and I feel completely recovered and back in business again,” Richard says. ”The pain in my back went away relatively quick and I could start working on my fitness and start the recovery a bit earlier than planned. The bones are healed and I feel ready for a comeback.”
Richard will make his comeback in the city race in Gothenburg, a race he won last year which so far is the only BMW-win on the harbour city track. Richard drove a secret test with WestCoast Racing this week before the decision to return this weekend was taken.
”Gothenburg is one of those races you don’t want to miss and that has been a good motivational factor in my recovery and during the many hours at the gym. It was one of the races I won last year and it’s great to be back there again. I felt completely normal after just a few laps when we tested on Tuesday and after that we took the decision to return to racing this weekend.”
Richard praises the help he has received from Örebro Rehabcenter and the University hospital in his hometown Örebro, something he says has been a big contributing factor for a comeback earlier than previously thought.
”I really must thank Magnus Johansson at Örebro Rehabcenter and Ulf Nordström at the Universityhospital in Örebro. They have been absolutely amazing and extremely professional and that has been a big help in my recovery. My family and WestCoast Racing has also been a great support and to have had them to discuss my ideas and thoughts with have been invaluable. This means I feel very comfortable coming back to STCC now,” Richard finishes.
He will be driving a newly bought BMW 320 Si that WestCoast Racing has bought from BMW Motorsport. The car was used in WTCC by BMW Motorsport and Richard tested the car on Tuesday at Falkenberg race circuit.
”I never thought Richard would return already for Gothenburg,” team manager Dick Jönsson Wigroth says. ”It was a very serious accident and I’m impressed by his motivation and tenacity and the help he has received during his recovery. We always wanted to give Richard the best possible circumstances for when he would return and decided very early on that we would buy a new car. The test on Tuesday was very good and we could take this decision together after that test. His return and the fact that we once again are a two car team with both Richard and Martin Öhlin is something that lifts the spirit in the whole team.”
Bil # 1 återvänder till STCC. Regerande STCC-mästaren Richard Göransson gör comeback tidigare än planerat. Efter den hemska kraschen på Jyllandsringen i Danmark i april beräknade läkarna en rehabiliteringstid på minst tre månader men Richard Göransson återvänder till startlinjen redan i helgens STCC-race i Göteborg.
– Det här känns väldigt bra och jag känner mig fullt frisk och är tillbaka i vardagen igen, säger Richard. Jag blev av med smärtan i ryggen relativt tidigt och kunde komma igång med rehabiliteringen och träningen tidigare än planerat. Skelettläkningen har gått bra och jag känner mig redo för en comeback.
Comebacken sker i stadsracet i Göteborg, ett race Richard vann förra året vilket också var BMW:s första seger på stadsbanan. Richard körde i veckan ett hemligt test i Falkenberg innan beslutet om att köra i helgen togs.
– Göteborg är ett race man helst inte vill missa och det har varit en bra morot att ha i rehabiliteringen och på gymmet. Det var ett av de race jag vann ifjol och det är fantastiskt att vara tillbaka i Göteborg igen. Det kändes rätt efter de första varven på testet i tisdags och efter det tog vi beslutet att köra i helgen.
Richard har haft stor hjälp av Örebro Rehabcenter och Universitetssjukhuset i Örebro som varit bidragande till att han kan återvända mycket tidigare än planerat.
– Jag måste verkligen tacka Magnus Johansson på Örebro Rehabcenter och Ulf Nordström på Universitetssjukhuset i Örebro. De har gett mig en helt fantastisk och proffsig behandling och varit till stor hjälp i rehabiliteringen. Min familj och teamet har också varit ett otroligt stöd och deras support efter olyckan och under rehabiliteringen har varit ovärderlig. De har varit ett bra bollplank i mina funderingar och tankar vilket gör att det känns tryggt att komma tillbaka redan nu, avslutar Richard.
Richard kommer att köra en helt nyinköpt BMW 320 Si som WestCoast Racing köpt av BMW Motorsport. Bilen har använts av BMW Motorsport i WTCC och testades av Richard i tisdags.
– Jag trodde aldrig Richard skulle vara tillbaka redan till Göteborg, säger teamchef Dick Jönsson Wigroth. Det var en mycket allvarlig olycka och jag är imponerad av Richards vilja och envishet och den hjälp han har fått i sin rehabilitering. Vi ville ge Richard de absolut bästa förutsättningarna när han återvände och därför bestämde vi tidigt att skaffa en helt ny bil. Vi hade ett bra test med Richard i tisdags och att han är tillbaka och att vi är ett tvåbilsteam igen lyfter hela teamet.
